Sarah Nicholson, MS, LMFT
Many of us have "forgotten" the natural intuitive wisdom that we were born with that tells us when we're hungry and full. Your body knows exactly what it needs at all times and tuning in to it is a practice that gets easier with time and attention. Making friends with our bodies includes examining how we got disconnected and making a conscious choice to give ourselves the kind attention we need to heal. This also means listening to our body's need to stretch and move. Exploring feelings about movement can open the door to a flexible attitude that allows you to move in ways that you actually enjoy.
Just like taking medicine when our body needs it, there are tools we can use to manage our emotions when we become dysregulated. It's easy to turn to food, exercise, drugs, alcohol, spending, television, computer gaming, social media browsing, or sex to numb ourselves, but in recovery we can learn how to calm our nervous system in ways that are safer and more effective. Grounding ourselves by connecting to our breath and senses is one example of how to quickly adjust and calm your emotions. We can also explore the ways in which you already soothe yourself, but may not be aware of yet. See the tools page for some 90 second "Spoonfuls of Therapy" that are reminders of how to take care of ourselves, mind, body and spirit.
When we sisters get together to share our personal stories, in person or in online therapy groups, something beautiful happens. Not only do our bodies produce a hormone called Oxytocin which feels really good, but we also collaborate to bring out the best in each other.
Recovery Sisters groups welcome diversity of body, race and sexuality and are sensitive to our cultural need to challenge norms of exclusivity. Our group provides emotional safety, support, loving challenge and encouragement to take risks, as well as a place to practice using new tools. Discovering our similarities and honoring our differences allows us to form deeper relationships.
This process replaces shame with the joy of genuine connection.
The Healing Benefits of Group Therapy
Group sessions are designed to help you take the necessary steps towards growth and wellness through experiential practice. You will spend time connecting with your sisters by sharing your experience, feelings and progress as you take this journey together using materials I provide.
We meet every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (except holidays) for online psychotherapy groups. It is preferred that you have a primary therapist who I can collaborate with to help you make the best use of our group. (If you don't have a therapist already, you can see me for individual sessions or I can recommend someone with appropriate training and experience). You will also need to complete an initial psychotherapy assessment with me prior to joining the group. Sessions are purchased in advance for the month ahead to facilitate consistent group attendance.
